The ministry does not want to see contracts being snapped up by overseas competitors because domestic processors lack the necessary production capacity.
Several companies are already pooling their resources to secure business, while the Vietnam Wood and Forestry Products Association is establishing three regions around the country to help raw material importing operations and processing.
The association believes increased co-operation within the industry could save the timber industry about US$100m a year.
