Lows of up to -30OC are predicted and, if sustained, could kill off many of the beetles.

Pine beetles, which have so far attacked 8.7 million ha of forest in the province, are vulnerable to extreme cold before they burrow into tree bark for the winter.

But some fear the cold snap has come too late, with many beetles already expected to be producing their own unique anti-freeze-like substance.

If unchecked, the beetles are expected to kill 80% of British Columbia’s lodgepole pine forests by 2013.
