Scientific research has proved that plants have a substance called phytochrome that acts as a sensor to detect changes in the colour of light reflected from their surroundings.
Plants recognise far-red as the signal, and if an abundance of far-red reflection is detected the phytochrome will signal the plant to put more photosynthate into the shoots of the plant rather than its roots as it tries to outgrow its competition.
CJ Sheeran claims that coloured mulch has been proved to make plants healthier, conserve soil moisture, last longer than bark products and eradicate weed growth naturally.
“Our wood mulch product is certainly seeing dramatic growth in demand since first introduced two years ago,” said managing director Mark Sheeran.
He said coloured mulch was an eco-friendly way of using wood waste and offcuts and added: “It’s a win-win for everybody.”
