ConFor says proposed changes to draft EU legislation on tackling illegal logging appears to have avoided damaging UK forestry.
The organisation had been concerned that a requirement to introduce due diligence to demonstrate legal harvesting could have prompted extra red tape and increased UK timber harvesting costs.
It campaigned for UK forest owners to be exempt from this requirement as levels of illegal logging in the UK had been calculated at less than 0.5%
“There was real danger that the legislation could have had the unforeseen effect of damaging UK forestry,” said ConFor chief executive Stuart Goodall. “Thankfully that appears to have been avoided.”
