The timber window industry is looking at ways at further improving its sustainability credentials through a Defra process designed to limit the environmental impact of windows.
The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has welcomed the initial Defra report, the first stage in the development of a roadmap agreement, saying it has helped identify further opportunities to help wood gain a greater competitive edge over rival framing materials.
Defra’s report examines raw materials, production, maintenance, use and end of life disposal, plus areas where industry can improve.
The BWF has represented the wood window industry at meetings with Defra and is now working with officials to establish an actionlist where the industry can improve its green credentials.
“It’s no longer enough just to claim your product is sustainable,” said BWF chief executive Richard Lambert.
Mr Lambert said life cycle assessment analysis conducted in the wood windows industry, as well as involvement in the BE AWARE project, had helped demonstrate the progress already made by the sector to make environmental improvements.
