The challenge to build a good quality home for a construction cost of £60,000 sparked an enthusiastic response from the housebuilding industry.

Deputy prime minister John Prescott, who launched the competition, said the pace of the project had been remarkable, and work was due to start soon on the first of the 1,000 homes to be built.

He said many people were sceptical when the competition was launched, saying the challenge could not be met, and added that he hoped those sceptics would come to the exhibition.

So far, preferred developers for nine of the 10 competition sites have been selected.
