Around 25% of the UK’s total forested area may be enjoying some form of protected area status, according to a new report from the WWF and the Forestry Commission.
The new and detailed analysis of the large number of different designations and measures reveals that the UK could have as much as 633,000ha of protected forest. This is reckoned to be around 25% of the total forest cover and compares favourably with the WWF’s suggested target of achieving protected area status for at least 10% of forests in every country.
However, the report criticises the quality of official data and suggests the figure may be innaccurate due to double counting.
