The houses will represent about 25% of the number of homes to be constructed in the country during the period.

The commitment by 38 corporations in the housing associations was announced at a conference, “Linking Dutch Markets to Borneo’s Sustainable Forest” on March 26-29.

Indonesian timber producers attended the conference along with members of the timber/processing and construction industry from Holland to forge business relationships which promote sustainable timber supply.

The event was part of the “Building and Borneo” campaign, a joint initiative of WWF-Netherlands, FSC Netherlands, Woonbron and several large companies in the Dutch housing sector.

“The Dutch housing associations’ commitment to source FSC-certified timber from Indonesia augurs well for the country’s forests,” said Mubariq Ahmad, executive director of WWF-Indonesia.
