Ecuador is developing an US$800m planting and conservation programme to combat extensive deforestation.
The government said the 20-year initiative, expected to receive presidential approval before the year’s end, will reduce the rate of deforestation by at least 30%.
The private sector will meet 70% of the programme’s costs, with the remainder coming from government. US and Chilean companies are reportedly interested in lending support.
