A fast-growing environmentally-friendly hardwood is making waves in the timber trade, according to Weyerhaeuser.

The company says eucalyptus hybrid lyptus is suitable for numerous applications in the home, including flooring, banisters and cabinets.

The trees, which reportedly produce wood harder than oak, maple and cherry, can be harvested in 14-16 years in Brazil and are grown alongside indigenous hardwoods.

About 32 million board feet of lyptus is expected to be harvested each year, with Brazilian mills processing the wood before shipping it to the US.
