The European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) reports rises in European production and consumption of sawn timber during 2000.

At the Vienna general assembly, members heard that production rose to 111.7 million m³ and consumption to 110.6 million m³. EOS countries accounted for 75% of 96.1 million m³ of European sawn softwood timber production, with consumption at 74 million m³.

The EOS share of European production of sawn hardwood of 15.6 million m³ rose to 42.99% . Consumption in Europe rose to 18.9 million m³ and exports to 5.5 million m³.

Following a buoyant 2000, the EOS and European Timber Trade Federation predict an industry slowdown this year.
