Greenpeace criticism of the Finnish Forest Certification Council has been dismissed as emotional, political and misleading by the FFCC.

Greenpeace warned that the FFCC revisions agreed last year would lead to the extinction of hundreds of species in a report backed by Finnish nature organisations.

FFCC general secretary Auvo Kaivola said: “The report deals very much with the opinions of the authors and not with verified facts, which makes it difficult to analyse the texts in detail.”

He said that Greenpeace tried to deal with governmental matters, even though certification was in the private sector and in analysing the development of FFCC continued to make factul errors published previously.

Mr Auvo said the the report’s preference for FSC neglected that “FSC has no ways to audit the origin of the wood that originates from non-certified sources.”
