Finnforest (UK) Ltd has spent around £500,000 restructuring the Widnes and Hull sites it acquired from Montague L Meyer (MLM) earlier this year.

A total of 14 sideloaders and six frontlifts have also been supplied to the sites, part of a £2.1m investment by Finnforest in 72 vehicles from Valmar Handling Systems.

Redevelopment work has centred on improving the sites’ general health and safety and organisational structure, while stocks have been re-organised to make more effective use of storage space available. Finnforest inherited 222,000ft2 of covered storage at Widnes.

The company, which bought MLM’s softwood business in April, has erected two of its ‘100’ range of log cabins at the 13.5-acre Widnes site for use as changing rooms by mill staff. A further upgrade of office facilities is being planned.

Much greater investment will be made in manufacturing technology next year.
