The Federation believes that increasing the production of bioenergy in a sustainable way requires the “sensible” use of biomass.
“There is only a limited supply of biomass, such as wood,” it states, “so its use must be focused on products with a high-added value. Wood that is suitable for processing, on the other hand, can be used to meet energy needs.”
The Commission estimates that the increased production of renewable energy will create over 140,000 new jobs in Europe.
However, the Federation warns bioenergy objectives should be balanced with the biomass processing industry. “It is important to make sure bioenergy objectives do not threaten the three million existing jobs in the processing sector.”
