The net carbon sink of Finnish forests is now over 40 million tonnes, according to the results of the 10th national forest inventory.
The carbon sink has now doubled between 1990 and 2008 to 42 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The increase is down to rapid growth of the forests, with annual growth exceeding the annual drain (harvest and drain).
Since 1990, 149,000ha of land have been forested, while 226,000ha of forest have been converted into other uses.
The amount of decaying wood in the forests in southern Finland has grown to 3.3m³ per ha.
