Fitchett & Woollacott Ltd is aiming for a record number of entries in its annual National Student Woodworking Competition.

The contest is open to schools and colleges across the UK, and last year had over 300 entries.

“In 2009 we are promoting the competition with even more gusto and adding new categories, such as an A-level team contest,” said Norman McKenna, operations director at the timber merchant and distributor.

“Schools and colleges which have participated in the past have found it highly beneficial in motivating design and technology students. We hope the new elements we’re introducing will encourage entries from even more.”

Students can compete in three age bands for a range of prizes. Their schools stand to win timber and equipment for their design and technology departments.

Last year’s gold medal winners included a chair in laminated beech, an oak, teak and walnut chess table and a mahogany coffee table.

Entry details can be found at www.fitchetts.co.uk and the awards will be presented at the company’s Nottingham headquarters in November.
