Eight people have been killed and more than 20,000ha of trees lost in forest fires in Algeria.

The fires are raging in 19 regions of northern Algeria.

The level of forestry destruction the is thought to be the worst since 1983, with olive groves, pine trees, oaks and cedar affected.

Greece’s forest fires this year are among the worst recorded, while blazes have also broken out across Croatia and Spain. The hot dry summer and high winds across the Mediterrannean are blamed for the severity of the fires.
