Brazil has introduced new sustainable forestry measures which will open up 32 million acres to logging.

The law, backed by Greenpeace, will mean 3% of the Amazon rainforest is available for timber harvesting.

Brazilian companies can bid for 40-year contracts, which will allow logging under a sustainable development plan. Logging will be barred in nature reserves and indian territories.

Only about five or six trees can be harvested every 10 years from an area similar to the size of a football pitch.

Brazil’s government said the law would help fight illegal logging, while contracts could finance a new forestry service to help enforce environmental regulations.
