Some 8.8 million tonnes of UK roundwood were delivered to primary wood processors and others in 2004, according to newly-published statistics.

The Forestry Commission‘s “UK Timber Statistics 2004”, which for the first time include Northern Ireland, says 5 million green tonnes (57% of the total UK roundwood deliveries) were sawlogs delivered to sawmills.

A further 1.5 million tonnes went to wood-based panel mills and 0.7 million tonnes were delivered to integrated pulp and paper mills. Other uses included round fencing, fuel wood, shavings and exports of roundwood.

The report is available on the Forestry Commission’s website at www.forestry.gov.uk/statistics.
