International protest from environmentalists has forced Glasgow city council to axe plans for a mahogany door at the entrance to its City Chambers office.

When the proposal was announced early in 2002 it sparked a storm of disapproval. Environmentalists from around the world sent a barrage of protest letters and e-mails and Friends of the Earth launched an internet campaign fearing the mahogany would come from a non-sustainable source.

Now the council has pledged to use only Forest Stewardship Council certified timber, substituting jatoba wood for the mahogany.
