Greenpeace activists have blocked a ship carrying Brazilian tropical hardwood in the French port of Caen.

The Galina III was prevented from docking at the port with its cargo of timber, including decking species massaranduba, ipe, garapa and cumaru, when activists boarded the vessel and attached themselves to its cranes.

Greenpeace claims the ship contains Amazon timber acquired from companies with links to illegal logging activities.

The group says between 63-80% of timber from the Brazilian Amazon is illegally logged.
