The Forestry Commission has taken delivery of an environmentally-friendly harvester which runs on biodegradable vegetable oil and can process a tree in under 30 seconds.

The £140,000 Daewoo 220 Excavator with a Waratah HTH470 head, will help streamline timber production in the Lake District, felling the bulk of the 20,000 tonnes of wood produced annually in Grizedale.

Graeme Prest, manager of the Forestry Commission’s North-West England forest district, said: “The addition of the new harvester to our operations means that the whole process, from chopping down the tree to delivering the timber, is more ecologically sound than ever before.”
