The Symington Coffee Mills Factory in Market Harborough, Leicestershire has been turned into upmarket apartments by Attridge Developments and, due to the historical importance of the building, timber engineering firm Palgrave Brown was called in to help recreate traditional timber spindles and handrails for the project’s staircases.

“It was essential that any internal fixtures and fittings were produced as closely to the original as possible,” said Palgrave area sales manager Jeff Gaught.

“Modern day spindles and handrails are usually turned and shaped and fairly intricate. To fit in with the necessary industrial design, we needed to provide a more minimalist and pure feel.”

The products were manufactured by Palgrave at its Marchington joinery centre and were inspected by the local conservation office before being installed at the development.
