The Acimall survey of the industry covering the fourth quarter of 2013 suggests 2014 might be a better year for the industry following several years of decline.

The Italian industry grew 4.5% in Q4, compared to the same period in 2013, with foreign orders growing by 7.3% and the domestic market contracting by 5.7%.

The industry’s order book currently extends to 2.2 months and prices have been growing by 1% since the start of 2014.

Some 36% of survey respondents indicated a positive production, while 41% described the situation as "stable" and 23% "decreasing".

"There is moderate optimism about foreign markets, supported by order figures," Acimall said. "The attitude towards Italian customers is wait-and-see."

"Foreign orders will record growth in the next quarter according to 36% of respondents, while 59% expect them to stay at the same level. The outlook on the domestic markets indicates a decline according to 13% of respondents, while 73% expect domestic sales to remain stable."

Italy is the second largest manufacturer of woodworking machinery after Germany.
