Indian researchers have developed a cloned teak which is said to be better in yield than the existing species.

“The field trials of the teak are in progress at various places in Tamil Nadu and, after perfection, it will be released in a year or two,” said R Sundararaju, chief conservator of forests, Chennai.

Forest cover in Tamil Nadu has reached 17% of the landmass, against the stipulated 33%. Although Mr Sundararaju said it would be impossible to increase forest cover to that level, it might be achieved if farmers co-operated in increasing the tree cover outside the forest area.
