COFORD, Ireland’s National Council for Forest Research & Development, will hold a workshop and demonstration on information technology in the forest industry in Co Laois on February 11.

The organisers said that developments in IT applications have turned the industry into a more modern sector of the economy with GIS, GPS and decision support software now commonplace in forest management.

The workshop will demonstrate the latest IT application being used across the supply chain, from forest planning and inventory through to log optimisation in the sawmill.

Speakers will include experts from Finland and Canada talking about the latest software developments to enable optimum stand assessment and facilitating route optimisation for roundwood haulage.
