Companies demonstrating significant technological or environmental improvements in the woodworking sector have been presented with the internationally recognised Challengers Distinguished Achievements Award.

An awards ceremony was held at the International Woodworking Machinery and Furniture Supply Fair (IWF 2002) in Atlanta on August 22, following final judging of the 21 finalists the previous day.

The winners are Copemaster (a division of Shaw Millwork Incorporated) – for its Copemaster; CryoKinetics Division of the LAW Group Inc – for its automated abrasive belt cleaning system; Gladu Tools, Inc – ProcentriX clamping and positioning system; Infinite Reverse Profiling, LLC – infinitely adjustable hold-down shoe; James L Taylor Mfg/Cameron Automation – Opti-Match; Stiles Machinery, Inc – Heian stack router FA line; Stiles, Heinrich KUPER GmbH & Co KG – veneer cross feed splicer.

The IWF also announced winners of its Design Emphasis competition for advanced-level student furniture designers. The ‘Best of Show’ award was given to Colgate Searle from the Rhode Island School of Design for his entry ‘four dining chairs from one sheet of plywood’.
