This year’s annual Institute of Wood Science (IWSc) conference promises to mix business and pleasure.

The September 18-19 event is being held at the University of Bath and the programme includes a trip to the National Trust’s Stourhead forest and gardens and a reception and dinner at the Roman Baths.

The conference itself, themed ‘Traditional to Modern’, will include presentations by Glenn Howells on the Savill Building and Helmut Holl on the principles of Baufritz houses. The owner of a Baufritz house in Bath, which was featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs, will give her personal impressions.

On the technical side, Bill Keir from Oakwrights will talk about traditional oak frame construction and Nick Milestone of B&K Timber Structures will present a session on hybrid timber construction.

Places are still available at the basic delegate fee of £110. Call the IWSc on 020 7256 2700 for more details.
