The 55-year-old man was being held on suspicion of breaking forestry laws and vandalising private land. He was quoted as saying he did not know he needed to inform the city government about the felling.
He is alleged to have cut down about 1,100 Japanese cedar and cypress tree last year near the sumit of Mount Amida.
Damage to the forest is estimated at US$62,321.
