The local prefecture is providing subsidies for 36 houses under the wood mileage scheme in which contractors receive up to Y200,000 (£883) for using locally-grown timber.
An official said: “As the place where Kyoto was born, we are actively promoting environmentally-friendly policies. We want to be considerate of the environment in promoting forestry, too.”
To obtain woodmiles requires calculating transport distances from accurate records of where the trees were felled and processed into construction material.
