Westminster Magistrates Court heard that Sunbeam failed to test ventilation systems for extracting potentially harmful wood dust and failed to provide suitable respiratory protective equipment, controls or health surveillance for employees working with hazardous spray paints.

Sunbeam also failed to control noise exposure and to provide adequate information, training and supervision to protect workers from hazards, including inhaling chemicals such as isocyanate during spraying processes.

Two improvement notices were served by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) but these were ignored.

he HSE said employees were exposed to potentially harmful sprays and noise, but the company had no means of monitoring whether it was causing harm.
