The famous Major Oak in Sherwood Forest country park, Nottingham, has undergone comprehensive repair schemes over the years.

The latest involved painting the green fibreglass used to repair holes with 10 different shades of solvent-based Dulux Weathershield paint from ICI which contains a fungicide for improved protection. Nottinghamshire Council recruited a special effects artist to camouflage the material so that it blends more effectively with the tree.

The oak is estimated to weigh about 23 tonnes, has a girth of 33ft and is thought to be anything between 800-1,000 years old. And, of course, it’s said to have been a hiding place for Robin Hood and his merry men.
