Allegations that Malaysia is using cheap illegally exported timber from Indonesia to flood the plywood export market have been strongly denied by the Malaysian Timber Council.

A spokesperson said there had been no noticeable increase in Malaysia’s production or export of plywood and that, in fact, there had been a 4.5% drop in plywood production.

He emphasised that Malaysia was committed to ensuring that no illegal logs from Indonesia entered Malaysia and that the ban was being enforced as effectively as possible.
