Malaysia has exported 26,000m3 of certified timber products to Europe and Australia since 2002, according to the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC).

An MTCC spokesperson said certified products, which carry a premium of 3-4%, have been sold in Holland, Britain, Belgium, France, Germany and Australia, while the Danish government had adopted MTCC as an acceptable scheme for buying tropical wood.

The council said certification assures Malaysia of market accessibility now that overseas markets are demanding certified timber products.

MTCC admits that certification of tropical timber is “challenging” but said it had issued nine certificates for forest management in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak.
