Mersey Timber has secured £500,000 bank funding to develop a new e-commerce business.

The Kirkby-based company, which supplies sheet materials, vinyl-wrapped/PVC-edged kitchen doors and worktops, is launching four new websites after receiving £500,000 financing from Yorkshire Bank.

The family business will use the websites to sell its range of melamine- faced chipboard shelves and doors, with its extra funding used to purchase extra stock.

Mersey Timber employs 32 staff selling to the trade and public and has trebled turnover to £3.2m in the past decade.

“The industry has really changed in the past 10 years,” said Kathleen Stephens, who runs the business with husband Terry.

“Gone are the days of simply offering a choice of oak, beech and pine woods. People are now looking for a greater range, and that’s why we have opened our online stores.”

“This is a perfect example of a business spotting a quality growth opportunity,” said Andrew James, managing partner at Yorkshire Bank in Liverpool.
