Bendywood supplier Mallinson has teamed up with Spalding furniture manufacturer Lloyd Loom to produce designs previously impossible to make with wood.
Lloyd Loom’s two new Nemo chair designs using a Bendywood frame have attracted interest from a major US department store chain with about 40 branches.
The company showed off the designs during Bendywood’s launch at London’s 100% Design show in September. Production will start in January.
Mallinson describes the response to Bendywood – wood that is steamed, then longitudinally compressed using a patented technique – as ‘phenomenal’. It has attracted the attention of design and architecture practices Gensler & Associates, Foster & Partners and the Conrad Design Group.
Mallinson is building a 12,000ft² factory in Bridport, Dorset, to produce the raw material and components for manufacturers.
