NHBC’s latest statistics also show that new home registrations in London were the highest since electronic records began 26 years ago. Registrations grew 60% to 26,230 (2012: 16,364).
All English regions reported growth compared to 2012, with Scotland and Northern Ireland also reporting year-on-year increases.
UK private sector registrations grew 25% to 97,399, while the public sector saw a 37% increase to 36,271.
"Looking back at 2013 it is very clear that it has been the best in a number of years for the sector as a whole, across the entire country," said NHBC chief executive Mike Quinton.
"Over the year, we have seen a genuine return of confidence to the industry as builders strive to meet the growing demand for new homes that the UK clearly needs."
NHBC also witnesses an increase in smaller builders joining the NHBC register, with an average of 50 new builders joining the register a month in July-December 2013.
