In May, registrations reached 9,167 new homes – the largest since February 2008 when 10,465 were registered.

In the period March-May 2013, 36,487 new homes were registered, a 35% growth on the same period last year (27,125).

Private sector registrations were up 33% to 26,607, while public sector registrations grew by 39% to 9,880.

"The latest figures can be seen as proof of how various government initiatives, such as the Help to Buy scheme, are working in delivering more new homes across the industry and evidence of increasing confidence returning to the home building industry," said Richard Tamayo, NHBC commercial director.
