An increasing volume of PEFC-certified tropical timber will be coming onto European markets after the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS) was endorsed by the PEFC Council.
In the past few weeks national schemes in Gabon and now Malaysia have been PEFC endorsed, marking a “significant achievement” for sustainable forest management, said PEFC secretary-general Ben Gunneberg.
The Malaysian Timber Certification Council, which operates the MTCS, said endorsement enabled MTCS to achieve mutual recognition with 26 other PEFC-endorsed certification schemes.
“This means that the MTCS-certified product manufacturers and exporters will soon be able to combine PEFC-certified material from Malaysia with other PEFC-certified material under the PEFC logo,” said Dr Freezailah Che Yeom, chairman of the Malaysian Timber Certification Council.
