Poland continues to strengthen its status as a global player in the wood products industry, both as a supplier and a consumer, according to a new study.
The report by the US Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), published in Random Lengths, says Poland has 8.85 million ha of forest covering 28% of the country.
Most of the timber is pine (68%), with spruce accounting for 6%, fir for 3% and hardwoods for the remaining 23%.
Poland’s improving economy and rising incomes have created demand for new housing and, in turn, lumber and panels. FAS says new residential construction in 2000 grew by nearly 8% and commercial construction is also expanding.
