An expansion project costing IR£17m is helping improve the handling of timber at a major Irish container terminal.

Marine Terminals in Dublin, has installed a new Liebherr ship-to-shore gantry crane and has purchased another refurbished crane in the first phase of the project. The quay area is being expanded to improve the stacking area and will be serviced by four new rail mounted gantry cranes.

The port’s timber involvement includes imported Scandinavian sawn softwood and pine exports for pallet manufacture.

The investment will treble container storage capacity and allow the terminal to handle five ships simultaneously.
