An increase in the number of foreign staff working in production at SAM Mouldings in Antrim, Northern Ireland has prompted the company to put its management through Polish language classes.

The company has taken advantage of a scheme run by the Workers Educational Association. Job Rotation allows employees of firms and the unemployed to acquire new skills simultaneously and SAM Mouldings was one of the first companies to commit to the initiative.

SAM Mouldings managing director Sam McCrea said the company had taken on more than 10 eastern European workers during the past six months – about 10% of the firm’s staff.

He said: “The workforce in the UK labour market is getting tighter. Eastern Europeans are available, so the least we can do is to make them feel at home and be able to talk to them.”
