The Ayrshire & Arran Agreed Routes Map for timber haulage has been launched by Scottish executive forestry minister Allan Wilson.

The map, which identifies roads timber lorries can and cannot use, is the culmination of two years work by partners in the forestry, timber and haulage industries, the three Ayrshire councils and the Forestry Commission.

The aim is to ensure efficient removal of logs from forests to processing mills while minimising damage to minor roads and disruption to local communities.

Other solutions being encouraged are upgrading sections of public roads that timber lorries need to use; developing internal forest roads to bypass weak public roads; encouraging sea and rail transport where practicable.
