Logging levels are to be tripled in the Sierra Nevada as part of a new fire prevention strategy.
The Forest Service said the forest thinning measures were necessary to lessen the threat of destructive forest fires.
Under the new plan, logging levels will rise to 330 million board feet of green timber a year. The move, which has been strongly criticised by environmentalists, overturns timber cutting restrictions imposed during the Clinton administration.
