A team of specialists from timber and engineered wood product connector manufacturer Simpson Strong-Tie’s (SS-T) engineering division ran an intensive training workshop at James Jones & Sons Ltd recently.

The SS-T team spent two days with designers and research and development engineers at the Forres-based I-joist manufacturer, showing how to build more effectively through its range of connector products.

The training scheme follows on from SS-T’s “Think Tank”, launched in 2004, which brought together experts in the engineered wood product market. Since then the group has worked to help educate, communicate and deliver best practice, real change and new solutions to the building and construction industry.

The project now incorporates significant investment in training programmes for contractors, floor designers, architects, engineers, fabricators and building inspectors to ensure the correct specification, application and installation of current and new engineered wood products.

Richard Jarvis, head of engineered wood products at SS-T, said the company, which produces more than 5,000 different connector products, understood the need to provide in-depth training for people at every stage of the building process.

And John Hutton, design supervisor at James Jones & Sons, described the training as a comprehensive and valuable course with a highly effective practical approach which benefited staff on all levels – from designers and senior development engineers through to fabricators.
