The Bullitt Center office building in Seattle has been designed to be the greenest, most energy-efficient commercial building in the world.

The six-storey, 50,000ft2 building is a showcase project in the centre of the city and, with its heavy use of timber, is designed to lock away tons of carbon.

Peter Melchett, head of policy for the Soil Association, said it was great to see certified wood being used in a major commercial building.

UK Timber Trade Federation chief executive John White said: "The Bullitt Center provides another great example of why wood is the greenest building material known to man, providing all the flexibility a building designer needs, sequestering and locking up carbon for its lifetime and by using certified material, ensuring that raw material is available for the next generation of sustainable designers."
