The Malaysian government may turn to radio frequency identification technology to help combat timber thefts.

The microchips are used in warehouses and in retail to track and trace items around the supply chain. They emit a signal when passed by a reader, which is logged into a computer.

The environment ministry said it was considering a proposal to tag trees, which will alert officers when driven through a checkpoint. This will identify the culprits and give the location of where the tree was felled.
