The company has announced pre-tax profits of €306.8m driven by sales of €3.85bn, up from sales of €3.6bn in the first quarter of 2006.

“We are delighted to report strong earnings improvements in fine paper and wood products,” said Stora Enso chief executive Jouko Karvinen.

“The overall market situation and outlook are relatively healthy.”

However, Mr Karvinen added that the company is anticipating worse results in the second quarter as it planned to curtail production levels at its Finnish pulp mills due to a short winter harvesting season in the Baltics and Russia.
