The winning team of the wood. for good and New Civil Engineer Building a Beat competition has returned from a prize trip visiting Sweden’s timber producing industries.

The group from Malvern Young Engineers were flown by SCA Timber to Sweden, where they saw the company’s Tunadal sawmill, its 2.6 million ha of Forest Stewardship Council-certified forests, a tree nursery and visited SCA Research.

The four young engineers also saw timber frame construction projects, including five-storey timber frame buildings being erected in Sundsvall harbour.

wood. for good’s competition challenged young timber engineers to design a covered, demountable stage for a four-piece band with a 2m cantilevered roof. Malvern’s winning entry was inspired by natural spirals and the inherent strength of triangles.
