A task force has been launched to review forestry regulation and promote a more competitive forest sector.

The Forestry Regulation Task Force will identify the impact of red tape on businesses throughout the wood supply chain and review all relevant regulations governing management of existing UK forests and the establishment of new ones.

The Forestry Commision welcomed the task force and said it looked forward to eharing its suggestions to support a more competitive, profitable and commercially resilient secctor that will play a part in the low-carbon economy.

A wide range of stakeholders will be consulted by the task force, including the forestry industry, NGOs and community representatives.

Findings will be reported to the government by the summer.

The task force will be chaired by chartered forester Chris Starr and also includes ConFor chief executive Stuart Goodall, UPM Tilhill forestry operations director George McRobbie and four others.
